Eight-Pound Gorilla
It’s that time again—Issue Number 08 of Funicular Magazine! By the time you're reading this it will be three quarters of the way through 2021. In our part of the world, at Funicular Headquarters, we are very much ready for the pandemic to be over while many of our neighbours are being introduced to it for the first time. It’s a really fun place to be. The end of 2021 can come anytime it wants at this point. We are ready to move on.
We are also ready for you to read this lovely issue we have made for you. This is probably as good a time as any to say how thankful we are for our volunteer readers. Mackenzie Wiebe, Ellen Kartz, and Lamya Asiff read a lot of words and pages and they helped us make the decisions that needed to be made. It sucks sending a rejection letter but we always remind people that these are subjective decisions made in the moment by a small group of people. Nothing more. We are thankful for each and every submission that comes our way. We do not use the term “slush pile” at Funicular Headquarters.
An issue of this magazine will always represent a very small snapshot in time. In this snapshot we are happy to welcome back writers from across the Atlantic Ocean. They took a few issues off, but they are back now. We look forward to selling some copies of the book in Germany and Wales. We would like to go to Wales one day. It looks like a beautiful country. We hope you find a nice park bench or other comfortable spot in Wales (or another country of your choosing) to flip through the pages of our precious Issue 08 and read the words we’ve chosen for you as the leaves turn from green to red to gold.
